As I was heading down to Portland Saturday afternoon, I got a notification that the planetary K index was on the rise, solar winds were increasing, and tilting south. This wasn't modeled very well but I knew there was a sliver of a chance for an Aurora. So, I threw my camera in the trunk just in case. At 2 am Sunday after dropping off my friend, I stopped off at Chocorua Lake for an hour. There was a very faint Aurora low to the horizon with one or two pillars initially but it was fading quickly as it rotated out and New England headed towards dawn. For the shot, I managed to snap the Big Dipper, Airglow (which was abundant and visible by the naked eye as well), and a decaying Aurora low to the horizon. Not great but not bad for a unexpected, last-minute shot. #nh #newhampshire #newengland #northeast #whitemountains #whitemountainsnh #eastcoast #mtchocorua #mountchocorua #mountains #mountain #chocorualake #lake #lakeshore #shore #shoreline #wmnf #whitemountainnationalforest #airglow #auroraborealis #northernlights #northernlight #night #nightsky #nightphotography #stars #longexposure #bigdipper #reflection #green
