The late, great Clarence Clemons AKA The Big Man was born on this day in 1942.
I never had the chance to meet him, but photographed him from afar on many occasions.
If memory serves me correctly, this image was made on the original River tour on Feb. 5, 1981, in Kemper Arena, Kansas City. I didn’t have a photo pass but did manage to sneak a camera in. (Don’t tell @springsteen )

Pete: try your EOS R + 100/2.8L with focus magnifying. You can easily focus on the grain like we used to do printing in darkrooms.
Ever since I was young, I loved listening to him play. I only wish I had the opportunity to hear it in person. I bet it was incredible!
If this is the 1981 KC show, then I am somewhere in that seas of hands in front of Clarence. Was sitting second row center at that one.
THE BIG MAN 👏😎✅. RIP
❤️ Big Man Clarence Clemons
Watched Fatal Instinct for the 1000th time. Loved seeing Clarence in it. I had such a crush on him back in the day.
And the E Street band will never ever be the same
Also played in the E-street band? 🤔
Pretty good seats!
Great shot! I saw this tour at Red Rocks Colorado. Will never forget it.
I met him many times with mutual friends. A true gentle giant 😇. He is truly missed by more than just fans! A great “big” man in many ways 😇
What a band!
How lucky were we
I remember the tour well. Went to the show in the Meadowlands. First of a few shows.
Great shot! I met him when Bruce first played DC at the Childe Harold, a tiny club in Dupont Circle. I had not seen photos of the band, and didn't know how they looked. The Asbury Park album had just come out, no pix of them. My girlfriend and I arrived early, and were sitting at the bar when an African American man with biceps the size of my waist sat down next to me. He chatted us up while we drank, and waited for the band to start. Finally, a young guy came from behind a curtain on the stage, whom we learned was Bruce Springsteen, called out, "Time, Clarence!" He replied, "Coming, as soon as I pay for these ladies' drinks." Stunned to realize who he was. A gentle gentleman in every sense.
My hubby met him once at a cigar store in our hometown of Palm Beach Gardens. He was kind and polite and as my hubby said “enormous”.
Great photo!!!Any chance you were at the show at Nats Park on September 1, 2016. I’ve been on a 3+ year quest to find a photo from that show of Bruce holding up my request sign for Growin Up that had a picture of my 2 year old son Bruce on it.
