After reading Adam Frankel’s emotional book, “The Survivors,” I thought I needed some “lighter” reading for my next book of the year. ⁣

I had received adventure photographer Corey Rich’s book, “Stories Behind The Images,” from his publisher a couple of months ago and had perused a couple of chapters. ⁣

Corey in his introduction writes that each chapter is its own story. Nonetheless, I decided to read it cover to cover over the past few days. ⁣

Here’s my take: his photographs and stories are amazing because he can somehow makes great pictures while he’s hanging from a rope hundreds of feet off the ground. I have enough trouble with making great photographs when I’m standing on the ground, and photographers like Corey Rich, Brian Skerry and Paul Nicklen are making great photographs when they’re either rock climbing, scuba diving, or in sub-zero temperatures. ⁣

@coreyrichproductions paints a good picture about the life of the adventure photographer, which is a lot different than what I’ve done in my career. But I thought he was very transparent about the difference between being a “photojournalist” and what he does. ⁣

“But the reality of producing adventure storytelling media involves a drastic departure from the traditional fly-on-the-wall style of documentary work,” Corey writes.⁣

“When you tie in to a rope with two other climbers, you aren’t just the photographer; you’re a member of the team. There are shared risks and responsibilities, and you necessarily become part of the decision-making process that goes into executing an ascent. You’re there participating, but also striving to create the illusion that you aren’t there."

Awesome perspective Pete. If your ever visit southern Utah’s spectacular red rock canyon country feel free to look me up. I’d be happy to take you on a beginner friendly adventure to some of the most wild and remote landscapes in the US. I’ve seen a few photos you took on AF1 flying over this amazing canyon country.

I met @coreyrichproductions when he was an 18-year-old freshman photojournalism student at San Jose State. Back then you could tell he had an amazing future. So great you got the book and enjoyed it. Corey is a very special talent and a better person.
