Sovereign Hill is an open air museum in Ballarat, Victoria, set in the 1850s and depicting life after the gold rush of 1851. The site is set on 25 Hectares (62 acres) and has over 60 historically recreated buildings with machinery, artwork, antiques, carriages etc appropriate to the era.
The worlds 2nd largest gold nugget was found in Ballarat weighing 69kg (2,200ounces) worth over US$3 million on today’s market but much more as a single specimen. Gold is still being found in the Ballarat area with a 2kg nugget found earlier this year by a prospector with a metal detector.
