This is the story of a lone polar bear. We met this polar bear on the second day of our photography expedition to Greenland. Needless to say, we were all very excited: there is always hope on a trip like this, but one would be foolish to live in expectation of such a thing. In any case, we found ourselves snapping away, and I making sure people were well positioned to get the shot they came out there to get. We were on board the vessel and the bear was on a small island with no ice around (it is worth mentioning that it is normal for the area for the area we were in to have no ice in summer). We noticed the bear sniffing (us) a lot as well as getting up, walking a few paces and then slumping down on the ground again: very different form the fat, happy bears we had seen the year before. Something did not seem quite right.
After all was said and done, the captain explained to us that although the bear was not in very serious trouble, that he was thin and weak. Instantly, everything made sense, and what we had seen was a bear that has struggled to find food for short time, and was suffering as a result. Our incredible experience had ended on a somber and sobering note: that this should increasingly be the fate of the Polar Bear is a monumental tragedy. All this being said, I will never lose hope that we can do better. Why? Because saving something is better than saving nothing. #climatechange #greenland #silentarctic #polarbear

It's so sad... So sad
Poor polar bear 😔 I agree better to save something than nothing 🙏🏼
😭😭😭 So sad. 💔
You can definitely tell he or she isn’t well. Breaks my heart 😞
Yeah man the bear doesn’t seem to be in “normal shape”. Btw fantastic series mate 👏
Those creatures are so magnificent
That’s an extremely skinny bear!! 💔
Thanks for your amazing photos Joseph; you are a true master in photography. This photo is a true wake up call ab global warming; this animal is obviously close to starvation; so horribly skinny; as a walking skeleton inside the white fur. Ice gone and seals away with it. I guess you guys were the only “food” he had seen in weeks😰
Can you check my last post pls 🙌🏼👌🏼🇬🇹
Why didn’t you feed him/her 😭
Wait! Can't someone go back and feed it or rescue it??
It makes my heart ache..what a pity!
