Somewhere outside Moshi (I think), Tanzania // Oct. 2019
Sharing some outtakes this week of my recent shoot (and climb!) for @thomsonsafaris on Mount Kilimanjaro.
In early October, I, along with my filming and climbing partner extraordinaire @careywagner accompanied a group of Thomson Safari clients for 10 days as they made their way up Kilimanjaro’s gorgeous slopes to the 19,340-foot summit. It was an incredible adventure. And, as is customary with most adventures, it would not have been complete without getting lost in the woods for a few hours the night before the climb.
As we drove through Masai territory and the sun faded to a hazy pink in the distance, my driver, whose name was John, but who told me to call him “John Cena” for some reason, said to me “You know, if you get lost out here you will be in big trouble. For no one will ever find you.” Which made me laugh, and I told him that surely the Masai would rescue us.
I rarely panic when I don’t know where I am going because "getting lost” usually means taking an unplanned detour where I meet interesting people and encounter surprising situations that I otherwise would have missed. Like this man and his son who had the teeniest, tiniest roadside store I’ve ever seen in my life (my 6-foot self could barely fit inside!) The store owner sold pineapple soda, biscuits and candy. And even though he gave us the wrong directions, it was worth it just to drive around on backroads for a bit longer with John Cena, admiring the wild and untamed landscape the Tanzanian Masai call home. © Erin Trieb Photography
