I photographed this young woman in a shelter for abused women in India. She was hiding from her husband and her husbandâs family at the time. He had tried to kill her after she tried to file charges against him for repeated rape and domestic abuse. She said the police had laughed at her and made lecherous comments when she tried to file charges. She was forced to flee her village shortly afterwards, leaving her children behind. A 2014 study in The Lancet reports that although the âreportedâ sexual violence rate in India is among the lowest in the world, the large population of India means that the violence affects 27.5 million women over their lifetimes. However, A survey carried out by the Thomson Reuters Foundation ranked India as the most dangerous country in the world for women. Indian government surveys show that 42% of girls in the country have been sexually abused. One reason for this is cultural. Girls are often trained to be meek and silent. They are told to be quiet, to speak softly, to have no opinions. As a result, they are easy to ignore, overrule, and violate without repercussions. This may be changing, itâs been reported that over 200,000 woman in the Delhi area alone have signed up for self defense classes, with Krav Maga becoming popular. Indiaâs population is 48 percent female. But women hold just under 12 percent of seats in the national legislature. That falls well below the 30 percent âcritical massâ that the United Nations Equal Opportunity Commission believes is necessary for women lawmakers to be influential in policymaking. The evidence suggests that an Indian government with more women in it could better protect Indian women by passing comprehensive laws that defend women from abuse and help victims recover. #violenceagainstwomen #violence #domesticviolence #india @natgeo @gettyimages #kravmagaDownload image

Stunning image & thank you for sharing this sad story. I hope this woman is at least at peace now & protected from being violated. Men are a huge problem in this world & we heed to start addressing it for real. Enough is enough. I am so sick of seeing & hearing horrific stories of abuse towards women done at the hand of man. This needs to stop. It should never have began. All humans should be equal!
Wow. This is exactly why I do what I do. These statistics NEED to change. Thank you for shining a light on this. This picture speaks way more than a thousand words. ð
Yes this is what happen in India all the time with women. And nothing happens. Ladys stand up for your rights your humans rights ð.
Thank you for doing this great work and giving those women a voice by making it public to the world. I admire you ð
I canât add a like or heart to this because of the terrible situation women are in, in India. My heart goes out to these women. Thank you for explaining it so well.
So what happens next? Can she stay there permanently or until the threat âdies downâ if you will? Also on a very lighter note- congrats on a fantastic World Cup. I hope it brings a little joy to SA. Every little helps..
Herein is the worldâs problems. The feminine MUST take political control around our planet if thereâs any hope for humanity. Too much toxic masculine and malignant narcissistic men in positions of power have created a violent and dangerous world for all of us and our environment. Womenâs empowerment is our salvation.
At least you know the things wats happening in INDIA than govt. . . . ð¤ð
That's very sad
Thank you for your work â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸

This is the brutal real world for millions of people in the world. They are mostly alone. Abandoned. Your work is very important and u suppose very hard to do. You are a great Man. Sorry for my lame english.
Thank you Brent for taking this photo and telling the story. So important
Makes me again realize how fortunate I am to live in the US where I have the freedom to fight back and stand up for my rights as a woman and a human being.....
Poor soul, those of us who have suffered domestic abuse have better help here though there's still room for improvement..but my heart bleeds for people in other societies where women are just possessions of no value in many cases.
oh your photos are so beautifully sad. Wake Up WORLD and look at what rape, killing and abuse does. ..This must stop now. These men are cowards and bullies without consequences. In fact, they are political leaders.Stay strong all abused. VOTE. You are not lost but loved
Orem pela paz, peace, Jesus loves you, oremos
Beautiful photo. Patriarchy perpetrated by Indian men (and women sighed with them) are a national epidemic. Also: marital rape is not even considered a thing. We have a long way to go.
Some Cultures Are Better Than Others. I dont even consider Indians part of the human race
This is exquisite. And terribly painful.
