Luigi Ghirri, Studio di Aldo Rossi, 1989-90
Luigi Ghirri once wrote that Rossi’s works had helped him “clarify all the doubts and suspicions that I had long harboured about architectural photography” and that it contained “this miraculous balance between what we already know and expect from an architectural work and the sense of disorientation we experience when faced with something new”.
After weekends spent photographing the cemetery of Modena in solitude (which was still in construction at the time) and establishing a deep connection with its architecture, Ghirri and Rossi went on to collaborate in many occasions during the following decades.
In the late eighties, Ghirri captured the studio of Aldo Rossi in a series of images that, along with those taken in Giorgio Morandi’s Atelier, offer a glimpse into the private spaces of two of the most important Italian creatives of the time.
